Alberta's Oil Sands are deposits of bitumen, a heavy black oil that is converted into an upgraded crude before being used by refineries to produce gasoline and diesel fuels. Alberta's oil sands deposits are the largest in the world containing over 1.7 trillion barrels of bitumen, of which 177 billion barrels are considered recoverable using current technologies.
Bitumen is extracted from the greater Fort McMurray region and sent to be processed in Alberta's Industrial Heartland, a 194 sq. km. area surrounding the provincial capital, Edmonton, and including Strathcona County, the City of Fort Saskatchewan, Sturgeon County (Redwater) and Lamont County.Alberta's Industrial Heartland
Alberta's Industrial Heartland region spans a 194 sq. km. (75 sq. mile) area surrounding the provincial capital, Edmonton and includes Strathcona County, City of Fort Saskatchewan, Sturgeon County and Lamont County. Alberta's Industrial Heartland is Canada's largest processing centre for petroleum, petrochemical and chemical industries.
The Heartland has proven to be an ideal business environment for large and mid-size manufacturing companies. Since 1958, over 30 companies have chosen to locate to the Heartland joining other world-class corporations such as Dow Chemical, Shell, Imperial Oil, BP, Agrium, Sherritt International, Praxair, Air Liquide, and Chevron.
The area boasts over 40 industries with investments of over $25 billion in petroleum, petrochemical and chemical processing facilities to date with more industrial development in the works.
